MENTORS AND STUDY HALL AIDES WANTED
2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Teaching Mentors Commitment

  • What: Teach a small group of 5th or 6th graders in a core academic subject: Math, Literature, or Elective Seminar
  • When: 6:00-8:15 pm (one night a week)- Mondays, Tuesdays, and/or Thursdays
  • You do not need to have any prior teaching experience to be a Mentor and the curriculum is pre-developed, and highly-structured. All we ask of you is your time and your energy. You will be a role model to your scholars, and you will play an important part in their lives as you develop relationships with them.

Study Hall Aide Commitment

  • What: Work with a group of 5th-8th grade scholars to complete homework after school
  • When: 3:30-6:00pm (one afternoon a week)-Mondays, Tuesdays, and/or Thursdays

Locations

DC Metro locations (five) - Capitol Hill (1503 East Capitol St, SE); Petworth (1300 Nicholson St, NW); Adams Morgan (2020 19th St, NW); Benning Road (301 49th St, NE); and Alexandria, VA (4646 Seminary Rd)

Baltimore Locations (two) - Collington Square Elementary/Middle School (1409 N. Collington Ave.) and Dr. Nathan A. Pitts-Ashburton Elementary/Middle School (935 Hilton Rd.)

Upon receiving your application, a Higher Achievement team member will contact you for you interview. Additionally, all Higher Achievement mentors must complete the following prior to starting as a volunteer:

  1. Have a current TB test on file
  2. Provide fingerprints from the police department to be submitted for an FBI criminal background check.
  3. Attend orientation
