Higher Achievement Receives National Award for Excellence
Washington, DC— March 10, 2006: Higher Achievement was selected as the winner of The Excellence in Summer Learning Award, given by Johns Hopkins University after a national selection process. Honored for its rigorous model, innovative curriculum, and the academic gains of participants, Higher Achievement will be featured at the national conference on summer learning, March 22-24, 2006, and in media throughout the year. Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Summer Learning will also offer professional development and publishing opportunities for Higher Achievement.
Higher Achievement’s Executive Director, Maureen Holla expressed the importance of this award. The national recognition of this award calls attention to Higher Achievement’s effective opportunity-based model for academic advancement. I salute the scholars, staff, families, and volunteers for making it happen.
This award recognizes Higher Achievement’s excellence in academic achievement and youth development in its Summer Academy. This year, Higher Achievement will operate SummerAcademy in five Achievement Centers in the Washington, DC area, serving almost 500 motivated middle school students (‘scholars’). During the summer, scholars commit 40 hours per week for six weeks to tackle a challenging social justice-oriented curriculum, experience college life, and get a head start on the next year’s school lessons. The commitment continues during After School Academy and the Follow-Through Program, in which Higher Achievement works with scholars and families for acceptance and scholarships in top school programs. In total, Higher Achievement scholars commit 650 hours per year, in addition to the 900 hours students spend in school, for four years (5th – 8th grade). The results are outstanding. 76% of “C” students improved a full letter grade on their report cards and more than half of all scholars substantially increased their standardized test scores after just one year in the program.
