Each winter, Higher Achievement scholars across the Washington, DC region study poetry fundamentals of structure, style, and literary devices while preparing poignant poetry about love, replete with similes, metaphors, and other literary devices. Winning poems have been about a mother’s unconditional love, the heartache of romance, and the pride that comes with overcoming life’s challenges. These scholar poets perform their poems in judged contests, where they are quizzed on use of literary devices and their poetic inspiration. The winners had the opportunity to perform their poems at the city-wide Love Poetry Performance and this year, on the Kojo Nnamdi show! |
