Charity Works Honors Higher Achievement at Dream Ball
On Saturday, September 30, 2006, more than 1000 people gathered to support Higher Achievement at an elegant gala, organized by CharityWorks.
Held in honor of Jack Davies and sponsored by Capital One, this event raised more than $1 million that will support the growth and sustainability of Higher Achievement. As a result, the organization will pay off its headquarters office and serve an additional 200 children in the Washington, DC region.
In addition to the Dream Ball, CharityWorks organized a wine-tasting hosted by Bearing Point at the home of Joe Robert and the Nordstrom Designer Preview at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. These events introduced Higher Achievement to a new circle of supporters and raised critical funds that will launch the organization and its scholars into an even brighter future.
Every year, CharityWorks chooses one nonprofit organization in the Washington, DC region to support. Higher Achievement was fortunate to be selected as the 2006 CharityWorks partner after a rigorous selection process. In CharityWorks, Higher Achievement found outstanding mentors, supporters, and friends. Thank you.

About Higher Achievement
Higher Achievement works: grades improve, test scores improve, and academic behaviors improve. The program closes the achievement gap by offering motivated middle school students from under-served communities an opportunity-rich, nationally recognized year-round educational program from 5th – 8th grade. The program, held after school and during the summer, culminates in placement in a top high school program. Last year, Higher Achievement helped more than 300 children realize the power of their intellectual potential.
The organization has received numerous awards, but the most important measure of success is the results achieved by the Higher Achievement scholars themselves. For the 2004-2005 academic year, 76% of Cs became Bs in reading. From 2003-2005, 75% of 8th grade scholars were placed in top area high school programs.
Higher Achievement champions three principles: talent is everywhere, intellect is built through effort, and opportunities matter. They are central to our theory of change and the spirit of our operations, and for 30 years they have successfully transformed the lives of thousands.
