April 19, 2007 – Higher Achievement’s alumnus and program model shined in a national conference, hosted by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Summer Learning in Atlanta, GA.
Recent Higher Achievement graduate, Kristian Smith, a 16-year old student at Gonzaga College High School, gave the opening keynote speech to an audience of more than 350 people engaged in summer learning efforts around the country. The speech, entitled Justice Through Education, raised important questions about educational equity and urged the audience to act to make change for the future of our youth. Kristian also shared the value of his experience with Higher Achievement, a program that helped him “choose hope over chaos”. Now, he is “always thinking harder and pushing further with everyone I meet and everything I do”. As he ended his remarks, the audience leapt to their feet in applause for Kristian and his proud mother, Janice Smith.
Higher Achievement staff hosted a workshop on its social justice-oriented curricula. This session demonstrated how the program has weaved themes of Freedom, Justice, Solidarity, and Voice into all aspects of its curricula, from math and science to literature and social studies. More than 60 participants joined for this session, many of whom expressed interest in adding the lessons into their summer programs around the country.
