Ward 7 Councilmember, Yvette Alexander Visits Higher Achievement
November 29th – Today, scholars from the Ward 7 Achievement Center hosted a tour for Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander. The councilmember addressed the entire community of Ward 7 scholars, encouraging them to speak up about their ideas for the city. “We want to know what’s on your mind,” said Alexander to the scholars. “This city is for everyone, but sometimes the youth voice isn’t heard.”
In an engaging roundtable discussion with scholars Alicia Pinkett (7th grader), Tyree Pelzer (6th grader), Brittany Boone (5th grader) and Brandi Taylor (8th grader and Ward 7 Ambassador), Alexander answered questions about the state of education in the District, why she chose to run for office, and the best thing that she has done for the Ward 7 community. She also mentioned that before she began campaigning for her current office, she considered mentoring for Higher Achievement.
Alexander said that she would hold Mayor Fenty accountable for the changes being made to the District’s school system. She also shared that she aims for Ward 7 to be seen in a positive light. The councilmember’s Ward 7 pride shined as she joined the scholars in the Center’s chant, which ends “Ward 7, the best, the best! Let’s Lead. Let’s Learn. Let’s Go. You know!”
Higher Achievement scholars were excited about Alexander’s visit and plan to share their voices at an upcoming city youth forum.
