Baltimore, MDHigher Achievement’s rigorous afterschool and summer academic program gives youth from at-risk communities their best opportunity to succeed in middle school — and in life. Higher Achievement has served more than 10,000 middle school youth in the Washington, DC area since 1975, helping them achieve success in school and beyond. The organization’s strong record attracted national attention in recent years, resulting in investments that launched a national expansion beginning in Baltimore in June 2009. The national expansion continued in 2011 with the launch of a new affiliate in Richmond, VA. Higher Achievement Baltimore, held after school and during the summer, operates two achievement centers in Baltimore City (East Baltimore at Collington Square School and West Baltimore at Edgecombe Circle Elementary/Middle School). These achievement centers serve as out-of-school time academic magnet programs for underserved communities, drawing middle school youth from the host schools as well as from surrounding neighborhood schools. Higher Achievement currently serves more than 100 students from Baltimore’s most underserved neighborhoods.
